Which Side of a Cooling Blanket Goes Up?

Which Side of a Cooling Blanket Goes Up?

Not sure which side of your cooling blanket to use? The key is to identify the cooling fabric and keep it against your body.

If your blanket has cooling fabric on only one side, feel both sides with your hand. The side that feels cooler is the one to place against your skin. If both sides are made with cooling fabric, you can use either side. If you’re still unsure, check the label or product description to confirm which side to use.

The same rule applies when you wrap the blanket around yourself on the sofa, at your desk, or while traveling: keep the cooling side on the inside.

First, Identify Your Type of Cooling Blanket

Some blankets have cooling fabric on one side, while others have it on both sides.

Blanket type Construction How to use it
One cooling side Cooling fabric on one side, with cotton or another non-cooling fabric on the reverse Place the cooling side against your body when you want a cool-touch feel. Use the reverse side if you prefer its feel in cooler weather.
Two cooling sides Cooling fabric on both sides Use either side against your skin.

How to Use a Cooling Blanket Correctly

Once you have identified the cooling side, a few simple adjustments can help you get comfortable.

  1. Avoid folding it into thick layers. Spread the blanket loosely over your body. Keeping it from bunching up allows more of the fabric to release absorbed heat.

  2. Keep the cooling fabric against your body. For a blanket with one cooling side, use that side against your skin or lightweight sleepwear. If both sides use cooling fabric, either side works.

  3. Keep extra layers light. You can use a top sheet or lightweight pajamas, though either may make the initial cooling sensation less noticeable. Avoid placing a thick duvet over the blanket when you want to feel cooler.

  4. Allow some airflow. Gentle airflow can help heat and moisture dissipate. Use a fan, or open a window when outdoor conditions are suitable. Air conditioning can also help keep the room comfortable in hot weather.

  5. Adjust the blanket if one area feels warm. Shift to a section that has not been resting against your body, or briefly uncover the warm area to let it release heat.

If your blanket has only one cooling side, turning it over to the cotton side will not restore the cool-touch sensation. Keep the cooling side against your body and adjust which section is touching you instead.

Why Is My Cooling Blanket Not Working?

What you notice Possible reason What to try
It does not feel cool at first The non-cooling side may be against your body, or a layer between you and the blanket may be reducing the sensation. Check the product instructions and compare how both sides feel against your skin.
It feels cool at first but warms up later The fabric touching your body has absorbed heat. Shift to another section or briefly expose the warm area to the air.
It feels clammy High humidity, heavy sleepwear, or limited airflow may be contributing. Try lightweight, breathable sleepwear and gentle airflow.
It slides during the night Smooth fabric may slip against your bedding or sleepwear. Center the blanket with an even overhang on both sides.

A cool-to-the-touch blanket feels cool because heat moves from your warmer skin into the cooler fabric. As the fabric touching you warms up, the temperature difference becomes smaller and the cooling sensation becomes less noticeable. This is normal and does not necessarily mean the blanket has stopped working.

Q-max measures the peak rate of heat transfer at the initial moment of contact. Under the same test conditions, a higher Q-max value generally indicates a stronger initial cool-touch sensation. It does not tell you how long a blanket will feel cool.

Comfort over the rest of the night also depends on the blanket’s breathability, moisture management, and weight, as well as room temperature, humidity, airflow, and other bedding layers.

If you experience persistent or unusually severe night sweats, consider discussing them with a healthcare professional rather than relying only on bedding changes.

How to Care for Your Cooling Blanket

Follow the care label for your specific blanket, as washing and drying instructions can vary by fabric and construction.

  • If machine washing is allowed, use the recommended cycle and water temperature.
  • Use a mild detergent, and follow the label’s instructions on bleach and fabric softener.
  • Follow the recommended drying method. If the label specifies air-drying, avoid tumble drying.

Which Side of an Elegear Cooling Blanket Should Face You?

The answer depends on your Elegear model.

For a reversible Elegear blanket with an Arc-Chill cooling side and a cotton reverse, place the Arc-Chill side against your body in warm weather. Use the cotton side against your body when you prefer a less pronounced cool-touch sensation.

For a double-sided Elegear cooling blanket, or a cooling comforter with Arc-Chill fabric on both sides, you can use either side against your skin.

Colors, patterns, and fabric combinations vary, so check your model’s label or product listing. You can also browse the Elegear cooling blanket collection to compare designs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the cooling fabric touch bare skin?

Yes. Direct contact generally makes the initial cooling sensation more noticeable. Lightweight pajamas are also an option if you prefer wearing them.

Can I use a top sheet?

Yes. A sheet separates your skin from the cooling fabric, so the initial cooling sensation may be less noticeable. Choose a lightweight sheet if you prefer using one.

Is the shiny side always the cooling side?

No. Cooling fabrics are often smooth or slightly shiny, but appearance alone is not a reliable guide. Check the label or product instructions to identify the cooling side.

Does a cooling blanket work without air conditioning?

Yes, it can still feel cool to the touch without air conditioning. However, it does not lower the room temperature, and the sensation may be less noticeable in a very warm room. Room temperature, humidity, and airflow all affect how readily the blanket releases absorbed heat.
